Ride through sunny South Tyrol

next story

18.09.2003 from Ljubiljana, Slovenia - 1045km

Salve,

Just arrived in Ljubiljana, Slovenia!
After Innsbruck, I cycled over the Brenner towards Italy/Southern Tyrol. The pass must be the most ugly existing! A part from the motorway, normal road and railway tracks, there's even a tabledance club at the top...

In Southern Tyrol there was heavy traffic all the to Bruneck and Toblach. But the Pustertal is quite nice! After that I cycled on a really deserted road to Cortina d'Ampezzo, Pieve di Cadore and over the Passo di Mauri to Tolmezzo. The riding was quite rough as it was going up and down all the time... but now I am quite in a good shape.

Somebody from a petrol station advised me to take a small road from Tolceno to Cividale to reach Slovenia. I followed his advice and ended up in a small valley separating Italy and Slovenia looking rather like the end of the world than the border... The border guards looked quite astonished when they saw the new Swiss passport, but the Iranian visa got the most attention...

From Tolmin at the border, I cycled 45 km all along a small river turning to the right and left all the time. It was really nice cycling, as the traffic was light and the scenery wonderful. A really nice arrival in Slovenia. Far away from the major transit route from Italy.

After Idrija, a small pass (630m) followed and a few dozen kilometers further I reached already Ljubiljana.

Overall, I really like Slovenia! In the next days, I head for Croatia.

See you soon and best wishes,
Daniel
